An increasing number of school districts across the nation are beginning to engage in district-wide digital conversion – a comprehensive process that integrates 1:1 computing with a learning management system, digital resources, and significant shifts school practices to enhance student learning outcomes. Digital Conversion and the processes that are required to successfully integrate it into the “way of doing instruction” tends to generate numerous questions from students, faculty, administrators, school boards, and the broader school community.

As you engage in this session, you will examine the story of the East Irondequoit Central School District’s journey (as well as findings from other school districts that have implemented digital conversion), and you’ll discover the benefits realized from their sustained partnership with the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. You will learn how processes and procedures were implemented to facilitate the adoption of 1:1 computing, teaching and learning transformations, digital resources, and school leadership approaches … all of which impact student engagement and achievement in contemporary ways. You’ll also discover why a natural outcome of this partnership is the formation of a New York State Digital Conversion Consortium that can assist schools at any stage of digital implementation and what this means to students, teachers, administrators, boards of education, and the broader school community.

The session is designed to have participants interact with key questions and shared stories about digital conversion and connect their own ideas and questions with examples from the field of successful and unsuccessful digital conversions. The format will include presentation with stories from multiple school districts and activities to stimulate questions and thinking about digital conversion in K-12 schools and the significant potential it can bring to teaching practice and student learning.

Attendees are encouraged to bring an internet-connected device to this presentation (smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc) which will be used for participation and collaboration.

Objectives:
a. Identify and report key elements of a Digital Conversion and the potential impact that digital conversion can have on teaching practice and student learning
b. Identify and describe a list of key factors that school leadership must embrace to be successful in a digital conversion (such as an LMS)
c. Identify and summarize the benefits and challenges of participating in a K-12 / Higher Ed partnership
